The autonomous vehicle (AV) is arriving in Europe, and it is opening up a space for innovation that few players have yet identified: far more than just driving technology, it is an entire mobility system that needs to be designed.
This is the argument put forward by Thomas Matagne in a policy paper written for the High Commission for Strategy and Planning, entitled “Taking Back Control of the Autonomous Vehicle”.
The potential is considerable: used as a form of public transport, AVs could transport the same population with up to 4 times fewer vehicles, while also reducing the number of kilometres travelled.
On a typical 30 km route, simulations estimate the gain at €3.8 million per year compared with the current situation. Europe has the strengths needed to capture this value: longstanding expertise in public transport networks and the ability to organise complex systems on a large scale.
